Cala d'Or was planned from the 1930s by the Ibiza-born artist Pep Costa, and it still looks it. White cubic houses and low apartments, mostly two storeys, with small geometric windows set deep into thick walls. Small panes add up: there can be many of them for a modest house. Use the small-window size in the booking and count them all, because that is where the price really comes from. White walls also show every drip from a dirty sill, so sills and frames matter as much as the glass.

Good to know

Santanyí town is the opposite. Its old centre is built of warm-coloured local stone with big doors and shuttered windows, and its Wednesday and Saturday markets fill the square and streets. On those mornings there is little room to stop, so choose another day, or say where you can be reached on foot.

At Cala Figuera the escars have green doors and white walls right on the water, with houses stepped up the rock behind. It is steep and the lanes are tight. Salt spray is constant, and the narrow inlet keeps the air damp. Check whether a stair leads to your door, and mention it in the note.

Many of the holiday homes on this coast are closed for the winter and opened in spring, so that is the natural moment for a first clean. The terrace can be pressure washed at the same moment, and the sofas and mattresses of a shut-up house benefit from that timing too.
