In the old town the streets are narrow and cobbled, the houses are stone, and a good number of them have steps to the door or stairs that turn tightly. The 365 steps of the Calvari are the famous example, but plenty of ordinary addresses nearby are only reachable on foot for the last few metres. Tell us how close a vehicle can get, and if furniture has to be cleaned on an upper floor.

Port de Pollença is flatter and easier: a long seafront, low apartment blocks and holiday houses set behind the Pine Walk. The trade-off is exposure. Windows on the front line take the salt that a breeze lifts off the bay, and a summer of it leaves glass looking milky by September, while the rails and sliding-door tracks collect sand.

Many of the houses between the two are let for the summer, with a pool terrace and big glass doors to the garden. If guests are arriving, give us the changeover day when you book; it is the one fixed point in the plan.

The Sunday market fills the old town's main square, so that is a poor morning to park there. Plaça Major aside, the side streets around it are slow going for the rest of the morning too.
